Marianna Vrakas

Marianna Vrakas (b. 2003, Thessaloniki, Greece) who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, is a visual artist whose oil painting practice investigates how contemporary approaches to landscape and seascape painting can articulate a sense of place beyond its physical location. Her experiences living in Greece, the United States, and Japan shaped her fascination with cultural identity and its visual representation. This interest led to the development of her ongoing series Coordinates, in which selected longitudes and latitudes are stretched across canvas to examine how place, memory, and perception create parallels between geographically distant locations.

Her dual B.A. in Visual & Media Arts Practice and Chemistry informs her material research, particularly her pigment-making practice using natural materials sourced across Greece and integrating Japanese techniques. In 2024, she received the Arts & Sciences Summer Research Fellowship from the University of Richmond, VA, supporting the expansion of her interdisciplinary approach. Her Natural Art pigment research was presented in her solo exhibition at the Keller Art & Art History Gallery of the University of Richmond.
